One of the many reasons people gravitate toward video games is because of the escapism they provide. We are transported into a different environment and/or situation, fully immersing ourselves in a world that isn’t our own.
Some venture into a heart-pounding zombie survival game to feel the rush adrenaline, while others seek a more zen atmosphere in a farming simulator where accomplishments satisfy the reward system in the brain.
For those that know me, it’s no surprise that I’d choose the Zelda universe, more specifically, the land of Hyrule as seen in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Its map is not only extensive, but also contains numerous nods to previous titles in the franchise.
It’s been 100 years since Calamity Gannon had been sealed within Hyrule Castle by Princess Zelda. The world has struggled to rebuild itself after the wake of its destruction, and some wait patiently for the Hero to awaken and destroy the evil once and for all.
Yet for all that tragedy, the wildness thrived. Outside of the major dwellings of Hyrule’s races (the Zora, Goron, Gerudo, Hylian, Sheikah), forests, deserts, rivers, and snow-capped mountains dominate the landscape. Unless you stumble upon a Bokoblin camp or a Lynel, you’re sure to enjoy a breathtaking (no pun intended) hike.
Nothing would please me more than to take photographs of a sunset with the Sheikah Slate, pick flowers, and even hitch a hide on a horse–or deer. How about cooking outdoors on the shores of Lurelin Village or shield surf in the Hebra region?
I would love to meet the various races within Hyrule as well. From chillin’ in the hot springs with Gorons to shopping among the Gerudo, the options are endless.
I choose The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as the world I’d love to visit because of its beauty, diversity, and invitation to explore, but the best part of this questions is that the answer is different for everybody. I’d would LOVE to know where you’d travel to? Let us know on our Discord!
