Boss Rush Banter: What is the Best Gaming Snack?

While simple at first glance, this is probably one of the most challenging Banter questions to answer! Snacks come in a variety of flavors, textures, and levels of sweet and/or savory. While popcorn can be synonymous with movies (or watching an argument blow up on Twitter), what would be the ideal item to nosh on while saving Hyrule or successfully completing a stealth section?

Everyone has used this as a GIF or meme at some point.

The largest factor has to be accessibility. I need something I can grab a handful of and stuff my face in one swift motion. Nothing should be left behind–or at least after wiping my hand against my shirt.

In my own very humble personal opinion, I’d opt for trail mix as the best gaming snack.

Wait, what?

Yeah, it sounds pretty “basic,” but hear me out. Chips are great but can leave a nasty streak of oil across your controller. Cheetos are a personal favorite, but my Switch doesn’t like my fingers coated in cheese-dust. Ice cream has my heart, but it can be a bit messy for gaming. Trail mix, on the other hand, is portable, easy to handle, has potential to be healthy, and versatile. You can customize trail mix with anything, so not one batch is the same. Not a fan of raisins? Bam. Just cut it from the line up. You can utilize nuts, seeds, popcorn, dried fruits, coconut shavings, or chocolate! When done right, you can have a harmonious mixture of flavors. Can you say sweet and salty? You get the best of both worlds! Not to mention, the good fats and protein from the nuts and seeds will keep you powered for hours.

Here are examples of unique trail mixes to try the next time you power on your PC or console:

  • Tropical Trail Mix: cashews + almonds + coconut chips + chopped dried mangos + bananas
  • Chocolate Raspberry Trail Mix: popcorn + dark chocolate chips + pecans + almonds + freeze-dried raspberries
  • Ginger Apricot Trail Mix: dried apricots + pistachios + hazelnuts + cashews + pumpkin seeds + crystallized ginger
  • “Kids Trail Mix” (Aren’t we all kids at heart?): nuts + Cheerios + raisins + marshmallows + M&M’s or chocolate chips

Don’t forget, trail mixes are customizable, so if you do love Doritos or tortilla chips, you could add that to your own batch. See? Everybody wins.

Runner up: I give Eddie V. credit for introducing this into my life–Sunchip’s new Chili Lime flavor. This is not for the faint of heart. While it’s not too hot, the spice ramps up the more you eat, so pace yourself. It’s light, crispy, and lip-smacking good!
