We have arrived in the middle of May, and this MLB season is very confusing. Normally, MLB experts say that in the 6-8 week mark of the season, we find out the identity of each team in the league. However, this season has proven that our early predictions were completely wrong, and this season is going to be absolutely crazy. Big changes are in this week’s power rankings, let’s get to it…

1. Boston Red Sox (-)

Boston is 6-4 in their last ten games, and it might feel like they took a step back this week; however, the Red Sox are still leading the AL East. I believe that if there is reason to be concerned, it lies within the run differential for the Red Sox. Boston has been solid at the plate this year, scoring 199 runs so far this season. If you take the first month of the season, the Sox pitching was outstanding, but then they fell apart. It feels lately like the starting pitching for the Red Sox has lost something; the pitching as a whole has allowed a whopping 163 runs (highest amongst division leaders in the American League). The next 10 weeks are huge for the Red Sox; no team in baseball has a tougher schedule with no opponent currently under .500 until late July.

2. Oakland Athletics (-)

Did anyone think that the Oakland Athletics would be this impressive 6 weeks into the season? I have had to complete a full 180 on how I thought the Athletics would play this season. I think the pitching needs to improve if the Athletics are in this position come July then they will need to be buyers at the MLB trade deadline. 

3. Chicago White Sox (+4)

I made a mistake last week by not putting the White Sox higher in the rankings. I don’t think there is a more well-rounded team in baseball than the White Sox. Mercedes won the April MVP award at the end of April rankings, and he has continued his onslaught of the division. Chicago made quick work of Kansas City and completed an easy sweep of the blundering Royals. Keep this up Chicago; you can win the AL Central.

4. St. Louis Cardinals (+2)

Remember at the beginning of the season when I played the Cubs bias card and totally counted the Cardinals out after just two weeks? Luckily, the Cardinals could not care less what I think about them because they have caught fire. The NL Central is intriguing because you have no idea who can win this division. If the Cardinals play as great as they have in the last month, they will take not only the division but maybe even the league. 

5. San Francisco Giants (-2)

The NL West has gone from the best division in baseball to one that leaves everyone scratching their heads. The Giants were projected to be good, maybe even contend for the division, but the last few weeks they have stood atop the division and not looked down. I like what is going on in San Francisco. 

6. Cleveland Indians (-2)

The Cleveland Indians are making the AL Central a fun division to watch. Shane Bieber is my way-too-early pick to win the AL Cy Young award; Bieber has been lights out incredible the last few weeks.

7. New York Mets (+11)
8. Toronto Blue Jays (+2)
9. Houston Astros (+6)

The Houston Astros are back; after a disappointing month in April, the Astros have fired back for second place in the AL West. If the Athletics slow down for even a second, the Astros will strike and take the lead in the division. 

10. San Diego Padres (-5)
11. Los Angeles Dodgers (-)

At the beginning of this ranking I talked about how teams aren’t playing the way we expected–exhibit A is the Dodgers. The Dodgers have too much talent to be this bad in May; they dropped 5 series in a row for the first time since 2017, and to be frank I don’t see this improving. How do you fix a team that has all the talent in the world? I think the Dodgers are losing the mental game in addition to the 6 games they have lost in their last 10. 

12. New York Yankees (+4)

All I need to say about the Yankees is that Giancarlo Stanton is an absolute beast.

13. Milwaukee Brewers (-1)
14. Philadelphia Phillies(-1)

I am absolutely loving the NL East; this division might play some sloppy defense, but it’s so much fun to watch division games. If the Phillies can figure out their issues at the plate, they will make a solid run at the division lead. 

15. Tampa Bay Rays (-7)
16. Cincinnati Reds (+7)
17. Seattle Mariners (-3)
18. Chicago Cubs (-1)

I am finally in the mindset that the Cubs need to sell at the deadline. If I am in the front office of the Chicago Cubs, I am looking for as much value has as I can for Kris Bryant, Javy Baez, and unfortunately Anthony Rizzo (bias, he is my favorite Cubbie of all time). The Cubs have pieces that are awesome, but consistency is this team’s biggest issue. 

19. Texas Rangers (-)
20. Atlanta Braves (+1)
21. Kansas City Royals (-12)

What has happened to the Kansas City Royals? In April, the Royals boasted the best record in the league after 24 games; they have since gone on to lose 11 games straight, and their starting pitching has been atrocious. My advice to the Royals is to bring up Kris Bubic; at this point, it’s a chance for a young pitcher to throw against big league hitters. 

22. Miami Marlins (+2)
23. Arizona Diamondbacks (-3)
24. Los Angeles Angels (+2)
25. Baltimore Orioles (-3)
26. Pittsburgh Pirates (+1)
27. Colorado Rockies (+1)

A storyline to follow in the coming weeks is where do the Rockies move shortstop Trevor Story? Story is going to be the hottest piece going into the trade deadline, and I honestly think he is headed to New York to play in pinstripes. Overall though, the Rockies have held their own in the last week; however, it’s time for them to start selling pieces.
