This afternoon during the Ubisoft Forward event, Ubisoft unveiled the latest installment in the long-running Rainbow Six franchise titled Rainbow Six: Extraction. Extraction was first confirmed to be in development during Ubisoft’s 2019 E3 presentation as Rainbow Six: Quarantine. Extraction is being developed by a new team at Ubisoft Montreal and will feature crossplay support at launch.

In a radical departure from traditional Rainbow Six gameplay, Extinction will feature a story built around an alien invasion. Ubisoft confirmed that operators will control similar to how they currently do in Siege with multiple containment zones for players to tackle as a team. Among the new threats the Operators will face include the Sprawl (a black goo that swarms the map and connects the entire swarm), Grunts (who can incubate nests and are hard to eliminate in groups) and Rooters (who act as large, brute type enemies).

Squads advance through a nest by eliminating enemies and advancing through airlocks for resupply and healing. As each squad passes through an airlock the enemies will increase in difficulty, similar to how horde modes work in Halo’s Firefight or Gears of War’s Horde. Squads will have to complete objectives as they pass through the three levels of the nest. The ultimate goal of each squad is to eliminate the alpha of the nest, gather intel, rescue captured operators (who will be unusable while captured) and ultimately exfiltrate from the nest.
