July is officially over, and since our BRN last Power Rankings there’s been a lot of new faces settling into teams. August tends to be one of my favorite months for baseball, the season is a grind, and teams tend to show their true identity during this month, so without further ado let’s get in to this weeks Power Rankings!
- San Francisco Giants (-)
Giants just continue to win, and now matter what, their team seems to always be getting better. Kris Bryant played center field for them the other night and looks like he’s gained some spark in a new lineup. They have a tough weekend match up against the surging Brewers, but thn the next six games are against teams with losing records.
2. Houston Astros (+1)
3. Milwaukee Brewers (+1)
Trading for Eduardo Escobar has proven to be an absolute jolt to this offense. Brewers are already one of the best teams in the league on the hill, but now have a little more offense to go with it. If Yelich comes alive then watch out.
4. Tampa Bay Rays (+2)
Tampa is doing it again. They’ve quietly taken over first place in the AL East, and now have the best record in the AL. They just swept the Red Sox at home in a 3 game set, and see them again on Monday for what could be a killer for the Sox if the Rays dominate again.
5. Los Angeles Dodgers (+2)
Dodgers seem to have the yips every time they play the Giants, because they can’t seem to win a series vs. them. Even with the big trades they’ve made so far, I’d like to see more production out of guys like Mookie Betts. I’m interested to see if the dodgers can be as dominant as their lineup should be on paper.
6. Chicago White Sox (-1)
7. Boston Red Sox (-5)
Red Sox are finally regressing towards the mean. Having a rotation of Martin Perez, Nick Pivetta, Tanner Houck, and Garret Richards was bound to implode at some point, and it finally has. Their offense looks asleep at the dish, and their bullpen is struggling as well. This may be a hot take, but with the Yankees, A’s, Blue Jays, all getting better during the deadline, I don’t see the Red Sox making the playoffs.
8. Oakland A’s (+1)
Sterling Marte looks like an unbelievable fit for this offense. Their next ten games are against teams with losing records, but after that they’ll have a gauntlet of White Sox, Giants, Yankees, and Blue Jays. By the end of August, we’ll see if this team is tenacious enough to make the playoffs.
9. San Diego Padres (-1)
10. Toronto Blue Jays (+3)
Berrios shined in his first start, and Brad Hand is showing a presence in the pen. Combine this with their potent offense, and we get an exciting young team that I hope to see in October.
11. New York Yankees (+1)
Anthony Rizzo is batting .333 with 3 HR in pinstripes. Just sayin’.
12. Cincinnati Reds (+2)
Cincinnati Reds are 9-4 in their last 13, and 3.5 games out of the wild card. With Castillanos coming back, they could make a push for the playoffs. However, their pitching needs to step up to make this push.
13. New York Mets (-2)
Mets and Phillies have a big series this weekend for these teams. Lifelong Mets fans are nervous about their team letting them down (again), and Phillies fans are ready to raise the banner. Good luck to you both in this dumpster fire of a division.
14. Seattle Mariners (-4)
Mariners dropped four spots this week, and it’s not because of how they’ve played, it’s just because the teams the jumped them got better.
15. Philadelphia Phillies (+2)
16. Atlanta Braves (+2)
Fun fact: On Thursday 8-5, The Atlanta Braves had 54 games remaining on their schedule with a 54-54 record, and they were 27-27 on the road, and 27-27 at home.
17. Los Angeles Angles (+2)
18. Detroit Tigers (+2)
Tigers take 2 of 3 from the Red Sox this week, continuing their quest to .500. These guys are fun to watch, and are my favorite underdog at the moment.
19. St. Louis Cardinals (-3)
20. Cleveland Indians (-5)
Indians didn’t sell at the deadline, nor did they buy. They had a few questionable trades, and have been easily the most apathetic team this season. As Logan has said all season “Are they even trying anymore?”
21. Colorado Rockies (+1)
22. Kansas City Royals (+3)
23. Washington Nationals (-)
After selling off most of their team, the Nationals are still finding ways to score runs and win games. They are a little too far behind in the standings to make a push, but their young talent in September will be fun to watch.
24. Chicago Cubs (-3)
Unlike the Nationals, the Cubs managed to sell off their entire team and not win games. Cubs fans get to watch Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, and Craig Kimbrel all play for contenders and give them the chance to win the world series while the Cubs are a sinking ship to last place.
25. Miami Marlins (-1)
26. Minnesota Twins (-)
27. Texas Rangers (+1)
Right now it’s time for the young guys to get done playing time. Top prospect Yonny Hernandez was called up earlier to this week to play third base, and newly acquired RHP Spencer Howard is going to start seeing a lot more time on the mound. This has been a tough season for the Rangers, but their young talent could give fans something to look forward to in the next few years.
28. Baltimore Orioles (+1)
I still can’t believe that Mancini and Means are still on this team after the deadline.
29. Pittsburgh Pirates (-2)
30. Arizona Diamonbacks (-)
