Harmonix has been Acquired by Epic Games

2–3 minutes

Harmonix, the creators of the popular music games Guitar Hero and Rock Band, has been acquired by Fortnite developer Epic Games. Both companies revealed the news in their own statements this past week, stating that they are both excited to work together to create new musical journeys and gameplay for Fortnite.

Epic Games made the statement on their website discussing the company’s future, saying:

“The Harmonix team will collaborate closely with Epic to develop musical journeys and gameplay for Fortnite while continuing to support existing titles including Rock Band 4.”

Epic Spokesperson, Epic Website

In Harmonix’s blog post, they stated their excitement as well. They also held a short Q&A covering questions ranging from Fortnite integration and whether or not support for Rock Band 4 and FUSER would continue after the purchase was finalized.

“Over the last 26 years we have pushed ourselves to redefine how people experience and interact with music. From the earliest days of The Axe to Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Dance Central, our VR titles, FUSER, and everything in between, we have aspired to redefine what a music game can be. Now, we’ll be working with Epic to once again challenge expectations as we bring our unique brand of musical gaming experiences to the Metaverse, and we couldn’t be more excited.”

Harmonix Blog Post and Q&A

Though any solid information is scarce about it’s integration into Epic Games, it does seem that Harmonix will continue to support Rock Band 4 for the time being. It does seem like Epic has bigger plans for Harmonix within Fortnite, as the company has already experimented with in game concerts and events in the past.

My Take

Even though it seems like the gaming industry is consolidating at a rapid pace, I am glad Harmonix seems to be safe in the hands of Epic. Outside of Rock Band, they’ve always seemed to have unique ideas that just don’t quite hit the mark. Using their passion for music and Epic’s bank account could really benefit their new ideas if they don’t get shuffled exclusively into the Fortnite mix. Who knows? Maybe Epic will revive the plastic instrument fad. What do you think about Epic acquiring Harmonix?
