Square Enix revealed during Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct that the giant mech centered tactical RPG series Front Mission will be making its return this summer on Nintendo Switch.
Named Front Mission 1st, the new title is actually a remastered version of the original game that first debuted on the Super Famicom in 1995. The game has been remade several times, and first became available to Western markets in 2007 when it released on the Nintendo DS.
At the end of the announcement trailer, Front Mission 2 was teased, with a release date coming “Sometime later.”
The Front Mission franchise is a long standing series from Square Enix that has become popular outside of gaming, with manga, novels, toys, and even radio dramas inspired by the games.
Square Enix released games for the series fairly steadily until 2010, when the spin-off third-person shooter game Front Mission Evolved came out on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. The series remained dormant until 2019, when another spin-off called Left Alive was released to disappointing sales and reviews.
It’s exciting to see so many franchises long thought dead making their return; within the same show, remasters or new entries in franchises such as Advance Wars, Klonoa, and the Chrono games were all revealed.
