Day one is in the books for Comic-Con International 2022, leaving fans with a host of trailers and announcements.
The annual pop culture convention returned to the San Diego Convention Center for its first in-person event since 2019, returning after a two-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event officially kicked off Thursday, July 21, and while heavy hitters such as Disney, Marvel and DC are set to present more later in the weekend, there were still plenty of announcements. Here are some of the biggest announcements from day one at Comic-Con.
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Trailer and Synopsis Revealed
Paramount Pictures unveiled its first trailer for Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves along with a synopsis for the move, which is set to premiere in March of 2023.
The upcoming flick stars Chris Pine (a bard), Michelle Rodriguez (a barbarian), Rege-Jean Page (a paladin), Sophia Lillis (a druid) and Justice Smith (a sorcerer) as the eponymous thieves.
As for a synopsis, Paramount unveiled during its panel that “a charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.”
The cast and directors sat on the panel, indicating the movie has potential to spin out into numerous sequels that further explore the lore of Dungeons and Dragons.
Batgirl takes center stage in new Gotham Knights trailer
WB Games Montreal gave Batman fans another reason to get excited for the upcoming video game Gotham Knights.
Gotham Knights is an open world, third-person action RPG that focuses gameplay on various members of the Bat Family such as Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin, who each have to step up after Batman’s death.
This is the third trailer highlighting various characters in the franchise with previous ones showcasing Robin and Nightwing. The developer also announced the Joker won’t be in the game.
Gotham Knights will release on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on Oct. 25. WB Games Montreal recently announced it wouldn’t develop the game for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur Animated Series Trailer Unveiled
Disney is adding another animated series to its array of Disney Channel cartoons such as Marvel’s Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
The show focuses on 13-year-old supergenius Lunella alongside her T-Rex Devil Dinosaur. The two offer protection to New York City’s Lower East Side.
The main voice cast includes Diamond White as Lunella; Fred Tatasciore as Devil Dinosaur; and Executive Producer Laurence Fishburne as the Beyonder. The show also boasts a star-studded guest cast that includes Alison Brie, Andy Cohen, Daveed Diggs, Maya Hawke, Jennifer Hudson, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, Cobie Smulders and Wesley Snipes.
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is set to premiere sometime in 2023 on Disney Channel and Disney Plus.
National Treasure: Edge of History Teaser Unveiled, Harvey Keitel Returns
The National Treasure franchise has sat dormant since 2007 but will return to Disney Plus soon with the series National Treasure: Edge of History.
The show, according to Disney, will follow “Jess (Lisette Olivera), a brilliant and resourceful DREAMer who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about her family’s mysterious past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.”
The teaser was short but showcased Harvey Keitel returning in his role of Peter Sandusky, joining Justin Bartha (Riley Poole) as the only two characters from the original movies.
Jerry Bruckheimer is returning as executive producer alongside others. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Lydon Smith, Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano and Jordan Rodrigues will all join Olivera in the cast.
William Shatner Joins Masters of the Universe: Revolution Cast
Details are still vague about Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe: Revolution series for Netflix but Smith confirmed during a Comic-Con panel that William Shatner of Star Trek fame is part of the cast.
There’s no official word on who he is playing but this puts him on the cast alongside Mark Hamill, who voiced Skeletor in Masters of the Universe: Revelation.
Netflix revealed during its Geeked Week that the show will be treated as a mini-series, picking up where Revelation ended. Smith also announced during that panel that He-Man will play a larger role in the show.
Masters of the Universe: Revolution has no official release date as Netflix only announced it during its Geeked Week in June.
Other Announcements
Here are some other announcements that came from the first day at Comic-Con
- Trailers and clips revealed for Teen Wolf: The Movie, Vampire Academy, and Beavis and Butt-head.
- DC’s Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee said there are no plans for Zack Snyder of the Snyder-verse to return.
- DC announces a new comic series called Gotham City: Year One with writer Tom King and artist Phil Hester.
- Amazon renews Wheel of Time for a third season
- King of the Hill creator Mike Judge teases animated sitcom’s return
- Sarah Michelle Geller to play the lead in a Teen Wolf spinoff called Wolf Pack
What to Expect for Day Two at Comic-Con
Comic-Con will continue in San Diego through July 24, bringing with it a bevy of new announcements.
A key panel to watch includes Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Marvel Animation Studios will also host a panel so look for potential announcements about X-Men ’97, Marvel Zombies, and What If…? Season 2.
The Walking Dead franchise will feature heavily with panels from the main show as well as the spinoff Tales of the Walking Dead.
