Streaming War: Rings of Power, House of the Dragon Battle for Streaming Dominance in Nielsen Ratings

The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power just edged out House of the Dragon on the streaming front, according to the most recent batch of Nielsen ratings.

The ratings, which are from the week of Oct. 3-9, showed Rings of Power (seven episodes) had 988 million minutes streamed during that span while House of the Dragon (eight episodes) had 921 million minutes streamed. The top-viewed program during that week was Dahmer with 2.35 billion minutes streamed.

Nielsen provides a top 10 list of most-streamed programs while also breaking it down into original shows, acquired shows, and movies.

Rings of Power is considered an original program because it originally aired on Amazon Prime Videos while House of the Dragon is classified as an acquired show since it is also airing on HBO. The streaming numbers do not include data from traditional TV viewings.

Hocus Pocus 2 was the only other program to top a billion minutes streamed as it raked in almost 1.1 billion minutes streamed.

In terms of original programming, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which aired its eighth episode during that week, scored 454 million minutes, good enough for seventh. Andor, which aired its fifth episode that week, 356 million minutes streamed to close out the top 10.

Cobra Kai, which released its fifth season on Sept. 9, finished third on the original list with 558 million minutes streamed. This put it behind Dahmer and Rings of Power on that list.

While House of the Dragon dominated the acquired list, there were other interesting rankings.

The Simpsons finished ninth on the acquired list with 667 million minutes streamed. This data is from early October, meaning viewers began shifting their viewing habits to more Halloween-themed programs.

The Simpsons has its annual Treehouse of Horror episodes and Disney Plus capitalized on that by creating a Simpsons Halloween collection that featured all the Halloween-themed episodes.

Hocus Pocus 2 dominated the movies list while the original Hocus Pocus from 1993 made its way into the top 10 with 359 million minutes streamed. Hocus Pocus 2 debuted on Sept. 30.

Nielsen’s ratings are not perfect, but they do provide us an interesting third-party look into viewing habits. Personally, this is always fascinating and fun.

House of the Dragon does have the benefit of an HBO release along with the HBO Max streaming, but streaming is becoming king thanks to the shift to on-demand viewing.

Competition always benefits the viewers as it breeds the best product. Both House of the Dragon and Rings of Power have been neck and neck since they debuted so it’ll be interesting to see what the next season holds for both shows, which recently wrapped their respective seasons.
