The Witcher: Blood Original Inaugural Trailer Showcase Lead Actress Michelle Yeoh, Prequel World

Netflix recently dropped its first trailer for the prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin, placing Michelle Yeoh front and center in her starring role.

The reveal also unveiled the streaming service will release the four-part series on Dec. 25 later this year. This show will serve as a prequel to The Witcher, which has ran for two seasons on Netflix.

The trailer gave fans a great look at Yeoh as Scían, who is all that remains from her tribe of sword elves. There were sword fights, haunting music, and glimpses of other characters who will appear in the show.

Sword elves, according to Netflix, devote themselves to the blade. Scían follows this rite, leading her to seek out a blade that was stolen from her people.

As for the show as a whole, Netflix’s description sets the series 1,200 years prior to The Witcher. Its tale is lost to time as it centers on “one of seven outcasts who unite against an unstoppable power that took everything from them.”

Additionally, the quest the outcasts are on provides a “prototype Witcher in a conflict that bring about the conjunction of the spheres.” This conjunction brings together the world of monsters, men, and elves.

Netflix previously provided a full cast listing that included Minnie Driver as Seanchaí, Laurence O’Fuarain as Fjall, Sophia Brown as Éile, Lenny Henry as Balor, and Jacob Collins-Levy as Eredin, among others.

This trailer comes amid the news of Henry Cavill, who had played Geralt of Rivia for the first two seasons, stepping away from the show’s lead role after the upcoming third season. Liam Hemsworth is slated to replace Cavill in the show’s fourth season.

The Witcher TV show is based on a book series of the same name, which Andrzej Sapkowski wrote. The books also inspired a video game series of the same name that CD Projekt Red.

Full disclosure: I have not watched The Witcher, but this trailer has made me want to check it out. Yeoh looks so cool in this role and that perception is largely thanks to how the trailer portrayed her.

As for the series as a whole, this is how you keep the story fresh. The Witcher has yet to overstay its welcome and its introducing a spinoff while still in its prime. Dune is following suit with its own prequel series and it’s, in my opinion, the best approach to these massive worlds.
