Developer Offworld Industries and Sony Pictures Consumer Products have released a teaser trailer for an upcoming game based on the 1997 sci-fi hit Starship Troopers.
Titled Starship Troopers: Extermination, the game will allow players to assume the role of a space marine in the Deep Space Vanguard, and tasks them with crushing intergalactic bugs in 12-player, squad-based, first person shooter combat.
The developer states that players will have to work together in three teams of four to acquire resources, build and defend bases, and complete timed objectives.
Players can choose to take on the role of a support, defense, or assault soldier, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, weapon proficiencies, abilities, and more.
Enemy insects will also come in five varieties, each with their own specific abilities and tactics, though these have not been revealed yet.
Offworld Industries is best known for their 2020 tactical shooter Squad, which began as a Steam Early Access title in 2015. They’ve also been behind the games Beyond the Wire and Post Scriptum, set during World Wars I and II respectively.
Startship Troopers: Extermination‘s announcement comes at around the original film’s 25th anniversary, which saw release on November 7, 1997. The movie, directed by Paul Verhoeven, is set in the 23rd century, and sees humanity face off against an alien species known as Arachnids while attempting to colonize their home world. Though filled with action and violence, Starship Troopers is a satire at heart, examining the promotion of fascism that is rife within the sci-fi genre. Originally, performing poorly both critically and commercially upon release, the movie has since become a cult classic, and has launched a multimedia franchise of sequels, an animated TV series, comics, games, and more.
Eager fans can pre-order the game on Steam now.
