Promotional Art for Ys X: Nordics

Ys X: Nordics, Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana Get Japanese Release Window

Nihon Falcom has officially announced information, including a Japanese release window, for the next entry in the action role-playing game series Ys.

Ys X: Nordics is set to hit the PlayStation 5 and 4 as well as the Nintendo Switch in 2023 in Japan. The announcement comes during the 35th anniversary of the first Ys title release on PC in 1987.

Along with this announcement, Falcom also revealed an HD remaster of Ys: The Oath in Felghana, which is a remake of 1989’s  Ys III: Wanderers from Ys, called Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana. The remaster of the 2005 PC title is slated for spring 2023 in Japan.

The 10th numbered entry in the long-running franchise comes four years after Ys IX: Monstrum Nox launched on PlayStation 4 in Japan. It made its way west in 2021, launching on the Switch, PC, and Google Stadia.

Players will control the ubiquitous protagonist Adol Christin as he travels to the northern sea and Obelia Bay, which features numerous islands. He encounters the people called Normans in the new land as well as Griegers, a group of immortal undead.

The game will feature a new battle system different from Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. The system called Cross Action allows players to use either Solo Mode or Combination Mode in fighting.

Solo Mode allows the player to utilize one character with the help of automatic attacks and support from their allies. Combination Mode, however, lets the player use simultaneous control of a series of actions for both characters, allowing for back-and-forth melee.

Players will also get to control a ship, a first for the series, allowing them to explore the ocean through the use of sea maps. There will also be naval battles against other ships.

The game came with numerous screenshots of gameplay and the world.

The announcements for the Switch comes months after Nihon Falcom President Toshihiro Kondo indicated he was interested in bringing retro titles to the Switch in the future. Falcom is also the developer of the Ys, The Legend of Heroes, and Trails series.

The Switch is home to three Ys titles: Ys VIII, Ys IX, and Ys Origins. All those titles came to the PlayStation 4 along with Ys: Memories of Celceta. The majority of Ys  games are on Steam or once lived on the PlayStation Portable.

While these releases are slated for Japan only, it should give fans of the series excitement because both titles should make their way to the west sooner rather than later. While not set in stone, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana and Ys IX: Monstrum Nox both found success in recent years, laying the foundation for future success for the Ys franchise.
