Ys X: Nordics Shows Off New Character, Game Screenshots in Nihon Falcom Reveal

The world of Ys X: Nordics is starting to fill out.

Nihon Falcom recently released character and combat system information as the developer launched a new teaser website for the game slated to release later this year in Japan. Along with the information, the company posted a bevy of screenshots from Ys X: Nordics.

Falcom announced in late 2022 the action role-playing game would release in Japan sometime in 2023 for the PlayStation 4 and 5 as well as the Nintendo Switch. The company hasn’t confirmed a Western release, but both Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana and Ys IX: Monstrum Nox did release in the West after their Japanese debuts.

Ys X will focus on protagonist Adol Christin as a 17-year-old, putting him early in his adventuring career. Carja Varta will join Adol on his adventure in the northern seas.

Carja is “the only daughter of Grimmson, leader of the Varta Navy.” Those living in Karnack call her the “Pirate Princess” as she leads a group of pirates with a hatchet and round shield.

The showcase also highlighted the new Cross Action combat system, which allows players to switch between solo and combination modes.

Solo mode allows players to control either Adol or Carja, with the ability to switch, while artificial intelligence will control the other character.

This style focuses on speed-oriented moves as well as utilizing various skill attacks. There is a chance to switch mid-attack for chain damage. There are also counter attacks and opportunities to dodge.

Combination mode, however, combines Adol and Carja for a dual attack. This mode allows players to unleash more damage through simultaneous attacks, but it does reduce speed and standard movement.

There are defensive options in this game such as using the actions Guard or Revenge Gauge. This mode, however, is all about dealing higher damage and there are several power attacks that can topple enemies, opening them up to a flurry of high-powered attacks.

Ys X: Nordics will take Adol to the northern seas and Obelia Bay where he will meet the locals called Normans and a group of immortal undeads called Griegers. Players will get to control a ship during gameplay, a first for the series.

Falcom revealed Ys X: Nordics during its 35th anniversary celebration late last year. It also revealed a remaster of Ys: The Oath in Felghana (2005), which was a remake of Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (1989). The remaster is called Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana and is slated to release this spring in Japan.
