In a late Tweet from Redmond, Washington, Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith announced the company has signed a binding 10-year agreement with Nintendo to bring Xbox games to the Japanese console. The announcement centers on Call of Duty, but the deal has larger implications for the future.
Microsoft is promising access to Call of Duty on the Nintendo Switch on the same day as other consoles with full feature and content parity. It raises the questions about how much further the two companies will collaborate in the future. Could this mean that other Xbox intellectual properties such as Halo, Forza, and Gears of War will one day arrive on Switch?
Of course the Activision deal which has been challenged legally looms over this story, and it remains to be seen how the outcome of that acquisition will affect Microsoft’s deal with Nintendo. For more on Microsoft’s attempted acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, click here.
