Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia will be making their video game debut later this year with a new indie RPG inspired by the acclaimed Persona series.
Releasing for free for Mac and PC this holiday season, The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX lets players control the fearsome foursome as they, presumably, take to the streets of both Miami and Manhattan and do battle against gruesome looking clowns. Yes, you read that right.
The trailer for the game gives heavy Persona 4 vibes, right down to the catchy J-pop music, trippy visuals, and even the discernible menus. The game will also feature a calendar system where players must plan out their daily activities, and a fusion system to create new allies, just like the JRPG’s from developer Atlus.
The two man development team of Joey Pagano and Chris Lindren provided a trailer on the game’s official Twitter account:
Joey Pagano wrote on his game development webpage that the project came about from a meme that got out of hand.
“What started as a joke has quickly spiraled into a playground of ideas meant to explore just how much we can push our skills and retain our sanity with our own brand of humor. Simply put, this is Persona 5’s gameplay replaced with the context of The Golden Girls. There is no reason for why we used that coat of paint other than ‘how far can we take this joke.’”Joey Pagano
Speaking to Kotaku, Pagano admitted that while the game seems like a massive gag, it combines two of his biggest loves to produce one wild adventure.
Although it is possible that NBC and/or Disney may decide to issue a Cease & Desist order to close down the project, Pagano and Lindren remain optimistic about the title releasing this holiday.
What do you think? Will The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX actually release later this year, and if so, will it scratch that “Persona-but-with-geriatric-women” itch that we all have inside? Let us know in the comments below and on our social media pages!
