Atlus and Sega are bringing the free-to-play mobile game Persona 5: The Phantom X to Western, Australian, and Japanese audiences on June 26th.
The gacha spin-off game based on the popular Persona franchise of turn-based RPGs first released in China on April 12, 2024 as an open beta, and later arrived in South Korea and Taiwan six days later on April 18th.
The plot follows a brand new protagonist–a boy who goes by the code name Wonder–as he leads a double life as a student by day and Phantom Thief by night. The player is joined by Lufel, a mysterious owl creature who is a veteran Phantom Thief, as well as a new cast of classmates that dawn their own masks in their fight against corruption.
Gamers familiar with the Persona games will be delighted to know that you’ll have the opportunity to “engage in various activities such as hanging out with your friends and part time jobs” during the daytime, while sneaking “into the cognitive dungeons to steal Treasures and change the twisted desires of corrupt adults” in the nighttime sections.
Combat is also carried out similarly to the core Persona titles, which is turn-based and focuses heavily on exploiting the weaknesses of your opponents.
The key difference with The Phantom X with other Persona titles is that this is a gacha game. Gacha titles rely on players spending in-game currency to receive random drops–often as characters, items, or equipment–that are typically graded by rarity. Players are usually encouraged to spend real-world money to receive more drops, and/or increase the probability of drawing a rarer drop.
Atlus states that fan favorites from the Persona franchise will be available to add to your team, including the roster of heroes from Persona 5. Brand new characters are also being added for this expanded worldwide release of The Phantom X.
Persona 5: The Phantom X will be releasing worldwide on June 26th for iOS, Android, and PC.
