The first trailer for Gran Turismo, based on the PlayStation racing franchise, has been released.
Neill Blomkamp, best known for his science fiction films District 9 and Elysium, takes on a sports racing film.
Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, Gran Turismo depicts a young teenager’s obsession with playing the racing video game and his journey toward becoming a professional race car driver. The film stars Archie Madekwe as the main character, as well as David Harbour as his racing trainer, Djimon Hounsou as his father, and Orlando Bloom as a marketing executive in the motorsports industry. The film chronicles Mardenborough’s rise to success after winning GT Academy, a televised contest that challenged the best Gran Turismo players for a chance to earn a racing career with Nissan. The story follows Mardenborough’s transformation from a gamer to a racer, including his challenges. Additionally, Darren Barnet plays a respected GT Academy driver who feels threatened by Mardenborough’s quick success.
According to Variety, the screenplay is written by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin. Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Doug Belgrad and Dana Brunetti produced the film with Columbia Pictures, PlayStation Productions, Trigger Street Productions, and 2.0 Entertainment attached.
The film is set to be released on August 11, exclusively in theaters.
