We’ve all been there as gamers—can’t tear yourself away from that social media feed, just a few more reactions to those jaw-dropping moments in that AAA release everyone’s talking about. Has anyone pointed out that discovery you made? Just how did other people defeat that early-game boss? There’s something unique about playing a big-time release at the same time as everyone else.
It’s in moments like these that the gaming experience feels transcendent, like you are taking part in something larger than yourself, a cultural phenomenon that burns into memory alongside the incredible gaming experience itself. It can be easy then, for some, to feel pressure to “keep pace,” to make sure that each endorphin-fueling moment is experienced alongside everyone else. But sometimes, this feeling can become burden, can lead from excitement to stress.
Of course, for some the pressure works in reverse. There’s a legitimate fear of spoilers and a sense of loss when avoiding social media as a result. In this case, there can also be pressure to “hurry up and finish” the game.
When I play a big release, I try to balance myself between the desire to partake with others and the opportunity to experience the big moments alone. There can be just as much power in forging my own path as reveling in the cultural moment. But what do you prefer?
Tell us what you think! Do you feel pressure to finish AAA releases while they are still trending? Share your reactions in the comments below or join in the conversation on Boss Rush Network’s Discord, Twitter, and Facebook.
