Thief: The Dark Project deserves its stellar reputation: It refined the immersive sim. It all but created the stealth genre as we know it. Thief‘s world building and stylish sense of place are second to none. And it featured striking cut scenes. Now, members of the original development team have reunited to create “CUTSCENE ZERO,” a prequel short film that sets up the 1998 classic.
We watch Garrett, the titular thief, on a job gone wrong as mysterious figures discuss their plans for him.
The director, Daniel Thron, was the cutscene director and artist for the original game. Terri Brosius, a designer and writer on Thief: The Dark Project (who is most famous as the irreplaceable actor behind System Shock‘s SHODAN), reprises her role as the mysterious Viktoria. Jennifer Hrabota-Lesser, who provided A/V support among other roles, created the cutscene’s painting.
