Thief and Thief II: The Metal Age have a vibrant modding community that push these twenty-year-old games past any limit the original developers, or the original hardware designers, could have anticipated. One of the most ambitious and comprehensive of these projects, The Black Parade, recently released – and it is well worth exploring.
Nearly a decade in the making, Thief: The Black Parade seems to be the third game we never got: an expansion on the gameplay, world, and scope of the original games without the compromises that plagued Deadly Shadows or the misguided vision of the reboot.
The Black Parade comprises a 10 mission campaign that takes you back to before the first game, in the role of a new thief. New tools, new mechanics, and new tricks are provided. The game includes 1,800 new lines of dialogue and 30 minutes of hand-drawn briefing and cutscenes.
In The Black Parade you play the character of Hume, a hardened criminal who was sent into exile as a punishment for his crimes. The year is 833, you are now back in The City, a sprawling metropolis of soot-caked brick, greasy fumes and noisy machinery, with many a sinister conspiracy whispered behind closed doors. Lost and without a penny to your name, you are back to your life of thievery and must find your old associate Dahlquist. Shadows and silence are your allies. Light is your enemy. Stealth and cunning are your tools. And the riches of others are yours for the taking.
Thief: The Black Parade
It’s impressive what was achieved, and if you love immersive sims, it is well-worth playing.
