Space Marine 2 Lives Up to Its 2: Campaign Co-Op is Confirmed

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, the sequel to 2011’s cult classic, will release this winter. Developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, the game is set to bring Captain Titus back to face new untold hordes of enemies.

Space Marine 2 will be fully co-op for up to three players. Saber Interactive has not said whether this will be solely online, or allow couch co-op.

The original’s combat featured a unique blend of traits found in brawlers and third person shooters. The player needed to engage enemies hand to hand to replenish their health, and to save ammunition for the series threats (predating the DOOM revival’s somewhat comparable system by five years). The sequel continues that gameplay.

The enemies are Tyranids, a hive-mind collection of space bugs that eat everything in their path, leaving worlds barren. Imagine an entire spacefaring ecology of Xenomorphs from Aliens. When they invade, it’s a battle against time to save anything in their path. Saber Interactive’s creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick described them as, “extragalactic locust-like creatures, they’ve come in from goodness knows where, they spread like wildfire, they devour everything in their path, and they leave nothing in their wake.”

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is developed by a wholly new team (this extends to Captain Titus himself, now portrayed by Clive Standen, rather than Mark Strong). Despite that, by all appearances they are hewing closely to the original game’s mold.
