After years of silence, the trailer for Netflix’s One Piece live-action adaptation has arrived. The trailer was revealed at Netflix’s Tudum 2023 event in Brazil, and the series is set to release on August 31st.
This live-action series is based on the Japanese manga of the same name. The adaption will star Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji. The eight-episode show will give fans a first look at Netflix’s take on the story.
One Piece follows the journey of Luffy, a young man who aspires to become the pirate king. Alongside his crew of friends, he embarks on a quest for treasure. Eiichiro Oda, the original manga’s creator, serves as an executive producer on the series and has worked closely with Netflix to ensure its fidelity to his vision. In a statement shared on the One Piece Twitter in May, Oda expressed his satisfaction with the show’s progress.
The trailer provides a glimpse of Luffy’s crew and their formation, showcasing Luffy’s stretchy powers and hinting at the adversaries the straw hat crew will face. These glimpses suggest that Netflix may introduce some changes in its adaptation of the manga, although the full extent of these alterations will only be known when the series premieres.
The development of Netflix’s One Piece series began in January 2020. As a faithful adaptation of the long-running manga and anime, the show involves Eiic Oda himself in the production process. Steve Maeda and Matt Owens are the show’s developers.
Before the teaser reveal, Netflix transported the iconic ship Going Merry, constructed specifically for the series, to São Paulo, Brazil where the Tudum event occurred this year.
Growing up, I loved getting up for Saturday morning cartoons and enjoyed shows like One Piece, even though they had to censor many things. After watching the redub and catching up on the manga, I hope the live-action will give me some hope. The cast seems great and full of chemistry, while the production design looks amazing. Hopefully, the show will live up to my expectations.
