More massive leaks resulted from the ongoing FTC vs Microsoft hearing. According to IGN, the judge points toward Microsoft for providing the “non-public information”. From mid-cycle refreshes, to the next gen console, one in particular raised some eyebrows. Although it seems the leaked documents have since been removed, the details are all over the internet, one of which quotes Phil Spencer stating it would be a “career moment” if they acquired Nintendo. The idea sounds silly, but can you imagine…what if…?
For me, I personally see a close relationship or an agreed upon partnership of some sort between Xbox and Nintendo; however, I could never see one acquiring the other. Nintendo is a proud, brand-heavy, name in Japan, and their business philosophies in the industry are simply different than their western counterparts. Even in the post-Iwata era, people still view Nintendo as the innovative gaming company, unafraid to try a new gimmick. They are proud, not only of their IP, but also their hardware. Microsoft, on the other hand, are focused more toward their Game Pass subscription base. In addition, Doug Bowser recently stated that Nintendo intends to grow as an entertainment company, so Nintendo has a clear vision of their identity for years to come.
Of course, these FTC hearings have shown countless companies that Microsoft considering purchasing, and many surely wouldn’t make the “final cut” for their goals–Nintendo included. I do see Microsoft partnering with Nintendo–the most ideal scenario I have is adding Game Pass. Game Pass could draw even more to purchase Nintendo’s console(s), and Microsoft would make like a bandit on thousands, if not millions, of more subscribers.
