After a flurry of rumors earlier this week, Microsoft has confirmed in a statement Thursday that CEO of Gaming Phil Spencer is not planning to retire anytime soon.

The rumor began with Call of Duty insider @TheGhostofHope, who claimed that Spencer was preparing for a leadership transition, with current Xbox President Sarah Bond expected to take over following the launch of Xbox’s next-gen console. According to the post, Spencer was working behind the scenes to ensure a smooth handoff, creating panic and discussion across social media.
Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson added to the confusion, noting that he’d heard whispers during this year’s Summer Game Fest. While Henderson said he couldn’t confirm the details, he admitted he had been watching for a potential announcement—particularly in light of recent layoffs within Xbox’s gaming division.
But the rumors was quickly met with pushback. Windows Central reported that there are “no plans” for Spencer to step down, though they acknowledged that circumstances can change over time. To further clarify the situation, Xbox’s head of communications, Kari Perez, issued a direct statement to The Verge, saying, “Phil is not retiring anytime soon.”
@TheGhostofHope later responded to the official statements, saying, “Microsoft have commented on this and said Phil isn’t retiring ‘anytime soon’. Who you choose to believe from here is up to you. I just post stuff I hear from trusted sources and don’t mind if I end up getting it wrong.”
While this rumor has been circulating for years, this recent round stirred up a lot of questions about the uncertainty of Xbox’s leadership future, Microsoft’s response was swift and direct. For now, Phil Spencer remains the head of Xbox, continuing to navigate this deflating period.
