It’s no secret that during the Xbox One era, Microsoft was very quiet about sales numbers regarding the family of consoles. With the console’s disastrous reveal and its inability to get their messaging back on track mixed with the fast launch of the PlayStation 4, many fans thought Xbox was done.
When Phil Spencer took over as Head of Xbox, fans and industry enthusiasts rejoiced as he and his team revealed their short, mid, and long term plans for the platform, as well as making some key studio and IP acquisitions. Though sales numbers for Xbox One, estimations state that the family of consoles sold around 53 million units, a little under half of what PlayStation 4 has sold.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Phil Spencer discussed Xbox and where the console is position as of January 2022. On top of discussing his current statements about Xbox’s relationship with Activision, he also talked more on Series X|S sales and the company’s various business models relating to Xbox. The good news: The Series X|S and the platform (including PC and cloud gaming) are thriving, and though he didn’t give direct sales numbers, he did state that the Series family of consoles are the fastest selling in Xbox history.
“Supply is actually as big as it’s ever been. It’s that demand is exceeding the supply for all of us. At this point, we’ve sold more of this generation of Xboxes, which is Xbox Series X and S, than we had any previous version of Xboxes.”
Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox, Quote from The New York Times interview
Now Phil didn’t deliver numbers directly in his interview, but some digging from Eurogamer‘s Daniel Ahmad estimates that Xbox has shipped over 12 million units, putting sales closer to 11 million. He states via Twitter that the “dual SKU strategy has paid off for Microsoft amid the supply chain issues / semiconductor shortage.”
