Woven throughout the original Spider-Man game were hints of a bigger mystery when it came to Harry Osborn. Established to be a close friend of Peter Parker, it is hinted that he is abroad for various reasons.
But as we approach the end, we see that something a bit darker may be going on. That Harry’s excuse of a trip may be a cover for something else entirely.
When I first saw this as I completed the game, I thought that this was the major point to setup the sequel (to which I was thrilled as the original is one of my favorite video games).
Then, it was revealed that we will see Venom in Spider-Man 2 and that seemed to further confirm that we’d be getting closure.
But along the way, I’ve started to have some doubts that the two are as connected as I originally thought.
Venom is an alien symbiote who attaches to a host. Actually, Venom first appeared 60 years ago in 1963 in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 First Bonding.
He’s been seen throughout the comics over the years and even appeared in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. That movie looks to be a similar angle as to what we will see in Spider-Man 2.
Initially, Venom bonds with Peter Parker but before we hit the end of the game, he will find another host.
The question is, will that host be Eddie Brock or Harry Osborn?
If it is the latter, how did Norman Osborn come across Venom? What was he hoping to accomplish by bonding the symbiote to Harry?
If it is the former, what is Norman Osborn up to. Historically, knowing the character the answer is nothing good. But will he once again help set up a mess that our pair of Spideys will be forced to clean up?
And perhaps the biggest question, is we near the beginning of setting up an origin story for this universe’s Green Goblin?
Will we solve the mystery of what’s going on with Harry Osborn? I don’t believe we will. But there is a chance that we may gain more pieces. With the amount of lore surrounding the Osborn family in the Spider-Man series, this will not be a story they’d want to end sooner rather than later.
