A Haunting in Venice is a perfect movie for Halloween: eerie, mysterious, and possessing an unmistakable gothic touch. As of today, it is streaming on Hulu. It continues to play in many theaters. You have every reason to accept the invitation to a Halloween party the guests may not survive.
Yet one more film based on Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot novels, this one takes an unusual track. While it may share a few names and a prop with one novel, this is a wholly original movie in her tradition. As Poirot struggles with his faith, he must solve a seemingly impossible murder in a supposedly haunted mansion. The cast is truly exceptional, particularly the performances of Michelle Yeoh and Jude Hill.
The film is shot with rich, inky darkness dominating the frame. Characters emerge from, or recede into shadow, their way only graced by wavering candles or uncertain, amber bulbs. At all times, we are watching a horror film. Few scenes are lit to provide any hint of life’s warmth, and instead we descend alongside Poirot ever deeper into the house, the night, and the horrors.
A Haunting in Venice is a tight, taut thriller. It plays fair with the clues and the central mystery. You can beat Poirot to his conclusion. But nothing is ever that simple on Halloween…
