Ever since Iron Man released in 2008, Marvel has dominated, year after year, at the box office and with critics, but over the last few years, the company has started to lose its spark.

Variety recently released a bombshell report indicating alleged challenges within Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige’s management of the Multiverse Saga. According to the article, Feige and other executives unexpectedly encountered a substantial cleanup operation, deviating from their usual planning discussions for the future of the MCU during the Annual Studio Retreat in September 2023. Independent sources have not verified the information and the report lacks confirmation from Marvel and Disney at this time.

The discussion revolved around the fate of Johnathon Majors’ Kang the Conqueror, slated to be the main antagonist in the Multiverse Saga. However, with Majors facing domestic violence charges, Feige and other executives are reportedly considering contingency plans. One such option involves replacing Majors with another villain like Dr. Doom. Nevertheless, this poses a challenge as Marvel has already engaged Jeff Loveness, renowned for his work on Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, to script the upcoming movie Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, scheduled for release on May 1, 2026.

Feige’s uncertainty about Kang’s role as the main villain after Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania‘s lackluster performance. Despite Majors’ commendable portrayal, critics emphasized the show’s cluttered narrative and supporting cast. Moreover, Marvel Studios faces difficulties with the upcoming release of The Marvels, which is anticipated to underwhelm, compounding a string of recent box office letdowns.

So, what will be the solution for Marvel Studios? Unverified sources claim the studio is in talks of bringing back the original cast for an Avengers movie. This will mean reviving Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, both killed in Endgame.

The Variety article has been the talk of town among movie and comic book fans. Some argue it’s a bad idea due to how much build-up Marvel has invested in the story. Since we are in phase 5, what would be the point of replacing Kang the Conqueror with Dr. Doom? Fans alike would like to see Dr. Doom return to the big screen, but not in these circumstances. Instead of replacing Kang as a villain, why not replace a different actor? Fans have already expressed their preference on which actor to have going forward because having Dr. Doom appears out of nowhere sounds like lazy and desperate writing.

Some are mixed that bringing the original Avengers would be a great idea and would like to see more of the original cast, but the problem is whether all the actors would agree to return. For example, Chris Evans has expressed interest in the past. Still, a Captain America return doesn’t quite feel right, especially in these desperate circumstances. Even Robert Downey Jr. stated he loved the character, but he had one condition, and that is.

“There would have to be a super compelling argument and a series of events that made it obvious,” he said. “But the other thing is, I want to do other stuff.”

If you think about his journey as Iron Man, it feels complete so why add more to the story?

Some say it is a terrible idea because Marvel has already introduced about 20-30 new characters within the MCU. Marvel Studios has now hit rock bottom for even considering this idea. Sure, bringing back the original cast would be awesome, opening the doors for new stories, but under these desperate circumstances, it would be considered desperate and lazy writing.

Marvel’s Multiverse Saga would have benefitted from more strategic planning, perhaps with a condensed lineup of three shows instead of the current seven. While the initial content flood during the pandemic’s peak was understandable, the subsequent rushed production led to compromised visual effects, erratic writing, and disrupted storytelling. To maintain quality, Marvel should prioritize competent showrunners and avoid unsatisfactory conclusions like those witnessed in Secret Invasion. The studio’s capacity to manage multiple shows necessitates a fundamental understanding of effective showrunning and the importance of cohesive storytelling.
