In the growing landscape of indie game development, Toronto-based studio Massive Damage continues to look into new ways push boundaries with their unique action RPG game experiences. Following the success of titles like Star Renegades and Halcyon 6, the studio is back with their latest game title, Fera: The Sundered Tribes.
Since it’s first teaser trailer release in August 2023, this new 3D Action-RPG now joins other titles such as The Sojourn (Iceberg Interactive), Quench (Axon Interactive), and DeMagnete VR (BitCake Studio) as one of the eight “Best in Play” winners at this year’s Game Developer Conference.
About Fera: The Sundered Tribes
Scheduled to be released sometime later this year, Fera: The Sundered Tribes promises to deliver a captivating blend of elements that would undoubtedly pique the interest of RPG (and monster hunter) enthusiasts.
Set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world, players embark on a journey as a sole hunter turned tribe leader that encompasses hunting and harvesting immense beasts, engaging in agile aerial combat, fostering cooperative gameplay, constructing villages, and assuming the mantle of tribe leadership. It’s a multifaceted experience that aims to immerse players in a rich and dynamic universe filled with adventure and challenges.
At its core, Fera: The Sundered Tribes falls into the category of a 3D Action-RPG, a genre that has captivated gamers for decades.
What Defines a 3D Action-RPG?
This genre typically incorporates real-time combat mechanics within a three-dimensional environment, offering players the freedom to explore vast open worlds while engaging in fast-paced battles.
Unlike traditional turn-based RPGs, action RPGs place a greater emphasis on player skill and reflexes, often featuring dynamic combat systems that require precise timing and strategic decision-making.
Popular titles within the action RPG genre include classics like The Legend of Zelda series, Diablo, and Dark Souls, each offering a distinct take on the formula.
The Legend of Zelda franchise, known for its exploration and puzzle-solving elements, paved the way for action RPGs with its seamless blend of adventure and combat. Diablo, on the other hand, introduced players to the addictive loot-gathering mechanics that have since become a staple of the genre. Meanwhile, Dark Souls redefined the notion of difficulty and challenge, earning a reputation for its punishing yet rewarding gameplay.
With Fera: The Sundered Tribes, Massive Damage Studios aims to carve out its own niche within the action RPG landscape, offering players a fresh experience that builds upon the foundations laid by its predecessors.

By seamlessly integrating various action rpg elements like hunting, aerial combat, and village building, the studio seeks to deliver a gameplay experience that is different, but still recognizable by those who love the genre.
