In a world of constant revivals and chasing nostalgia, it can be easy to be cynical when it comes to another TV reboot.
Count me among the skeptics when I heard the constant pressure for The Office to get a reboot. This sitcom is my favorite of the genre and my second-favorite TV show of all-time so I wanted it left alone.
Recent reports, however, have caused me to soften my cynicism on the idea.
For one, Greg Daniels is attached to the project and he has largely struck gold with most of what he touches. He successfully rebooted the UK version of The Office into an American version that, in many ways, outshined the original.
And then the official announcement came that Peacock officially picked up the series that seems to be more of a sequel than a reboot.
In short, the same documentary crew that shot Dunder Mifflin’s antics will travel to the Midwest to highlight a dying newspaper that a publisher is seeking to revive. On top of that, Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore will star in the revival.
When I originally read the news, I breathed a heavy sigh of relief. My biggest worry was a reboot would interfere with the original and feel forced because, despite the characters going their separate ways, they were back.
Reboots are tricky because they are chasing the ever-intoxicating emotion of nostalgia. They usually fail because they try to capture what once was, not realizing that times have changed. What resonated in 2005 likely won’t in 2024.
This sequel seems to be blazing its own path while harboring in the safety of the established universe. That doesn’t mean it will be a success, but it does allow for some optimism.

The most successful reboots tend to be ones that find the balance of nostalgia and modern interpretation. They set out not to be their source material, but rather their own project.
Cobra Kai is a fantastic example of a reboot that never sought out to be the next The Karate Kid, but rather it’s own thing. Still, it kept elements and characters from the movies while still mixing it up.
You can look at others such as Twin Peaks and Fuller House as ones that tried to get away from the original. Based on the plot description, The Office sequel is taking that approach.
The show originally had plans to replace the cast and take the same approach as ER in terms of a long-running show with new cast members regularly. The fruits of this are why Pete and Clark joined the show in the ninth season.
Daniels ultimately scrapped that idea and the show went off the air in 2013. Still, that idea seems to have spawned the sequel we see on the horizon.
I am optimistic that Daniels can work his magic on this. He has a track record of bucking the studio and advocating for his staff.
The Office Ladies podcast is full of stories of Daniels empowering the cast and crew with both Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey expressing optimism about Daniels’ ability if a reboot were to come to pass.
There’s still a long way to go before we can fully judge what The Office sequel will look like. That said, I am heartened by the recent news and think there is a lot of potential as it seems to trend away from total nostalgia into a new realm.
