Guilty pleasures are usually associated with food people indulge in that they shouldn’t be like chocolate. Now, when applied to video games, I mean enjoying games that are niche or games that simply aren’t usually what players enjoy. It could also mean a game that other players have “written off” or decided was too corny to be enjoyable.
My first guilty pleasure game would be Love and Deepspace. The Version 2.0 update recently released which brought me back into the game. It’s a dating game that is hidden behind a gacha while mainly focused on combat and story-related elements. The game allows for players to interact with the love interests whether that be through quality time, hearing the heartbeat, or simply tapping the character.
It’s definitely a game that appeals to some people and causes others to cringe away. I’m a huge fan of Zayne’s character and intrigued by the lore of the game itself. It was the absolutely stunning visuals that pulled me in when it was first announced. I dove into it headfirst not expecting much and got blown away. Love and Deepspace is definitely a game that is one of my guilty pleasures to return to and enjoy.
Another game that was one of my guilty pleasures was Love Nikki. The game had me in a choke hold during high school, and I spent paychecks building my character’s closet. Although it’s not a game I play consistently anymore, it’s still one I find myself re-downloading from time to time. I can’t let go of the fashion and contests it offers. I’m excited for the release of Infinity Nikki since I’ve been a fan of the Nikki franchise for a while.
Guilty pleasures are things to enjoy when it feels like something that shouldn’t be indulged in. With video games, although it’s always “play what you want to enjoy,” there can still be some feelings of guilt or shame that come with playing certain games.
As I’ve developed as a writer and branched out of my comfort zone in gaming, I’ve realized that these games shouldn’t be a guilty pleasure. It’s the best and most understandable comparison I could make. Instead, these games are stories that comfort my inner child, that make me relax from being a hardcore player. They are games that I play simply because I love to play it no matter how corny or how weird it may appear to others.
