Boss Rush Banter: Will Players Walk Away From Video Games For Good?

2–3 minutes

From the olden days of Atari, Nintendo, Sega, and Arcade games to modern consoles and PCs, video games created one of the biggest industries in the world. They helped us recognize famous developers, award-winning games, iconic music, and, in this modern era, content creators and well-known websites.

As the industry continues to grow, the community is growing along with it. At some point though, some people fall away from playing and enjoying video games and I always wondered if there will be a time when players walk away from gaming for good.

There’s a multitude of possibilities that can occur. One of my concerns come from the discourse of other gamers attacking and judging people for their love of a game or who they are as a gamer on social media. With some poster’s negative comment and feedback to somebody’s positive post, it can get tiring and draining. Even with streaming, some safe spaces don’t stay that way unless they have some very good moderators.

If these moments continue to happen to where another Gamergate situation may arise, Video Games could lose its place in popular culture. Players could stop playing games for entertainment for good. It’s a scary thought.

Gaming is also becoming expensive. With the increase in production of triple-A games, we might see a high premium price happen, which could turn people away from purchasing games due to the cost of living. Though there is bigger issue that can make players walk awat from video games.

Another concern I have are about school shootings.  Video games, in some odd way, are still being blamed and falsely being the reason for these horrendous acts being committed, With these tragic shootings still occurring, there may come a time when gaming might lose its First Amendment protection and be banned altogether. Will there be enough people to fight against that? I am not sure about it.

We all have a passion for video games and want them to thrive and survive for years. It matters a lot to me and I don’t want to give it up or see it go away for eternity. As long as the industry continues to grow and stay strong, my worries won’t arise quickly. I just hope that it will hold a place in our hearts. That matters to me.

Do you think there may come a time when people give gaming up for good? What is one of your fears for this reason? Let us know in the comments or on our Discord.
