Since his manga premiere in 1967, Lupin the Third has been one of fiction’s most enduring characters. Created by Monkey Punch (the pen name of the late Kazuhiko Kato) and based on the works of Maurice Leblanc, the Lupin the Third franchise has spanned comics, TV anime, films, video games, and more. And soon, he’ll be back for another feature film.
Currently titled LUPIN THE IIIRD THE MOVIE, the upcoming film will be directed by Takeshi Koike (Redline). Koike has directed three Lupin films so far: 2014’s Jigen’s Gravestone, 2017’s Goemon’s Blood Spray, and 2019’s Fujiko’s Lie.
Here’s our first look at the next film in this series:

Every take on Lupin and the gang is unique to its respective director. Hayao Miyazaki, who was instrumental in retooling the early anime adaptation, brought the action-packed series a gentler feel in 1979’s Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro. Other directors and producers have leaned into more cartoonish plots (as with 1984’s Lupin the 3rd Part III), while others still have interrogated the gang’s place in both literary and modern fiction (the bulk of the 21st century television run). Koike is no exception. His LUPIN THE IIIRD films embrace a darker, grittier tone that, while not necessarily in line with the bulk of Lupin media, offers unique storytelling opportunities. Both the tone and the art style mimic 2012’s Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, written by Mari Okada and directed by Sayo Yamamoto.
It’s unclear whether LUPIN THE IIIRD THE MOVIE is the upcoming project’s official name or just a working title. It’s also unclear how this new entry from Koike will align with the others in his series of films so far. All we have so far is a release year (2025) and a tagline: “You haven’t seen the real Lupin III yet.” Given the localized marketing and subtitled trailer, it’s also highly likely that an international release is planned for the film.
