It’s been roughly three weeks since Indiana Jones and the Great Circle released on Xbox and PC, and it’s already clear that developer Machine Games has created a mega-hit. Perhaps better than any licensed game in decades, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle truly lives up to the hype of the movie franchise, transporting players back to the world of the 1930s and the time of great adventure.
From punching Mussolini’s fascists at the Vatican to taking out Nazis in Egypt, players travel the world to save ancient artifacts and deal out justice. And when Jones punches fascists, it feels exactly like the classic films, landing with a loud SMACK! The puzzles and dungeon-like ruins are a blast to solve and explore. It’s enough to make you re-watch the trilogy all in one night.
The game features seven main missions as part of the single-player campaign. They are as follows:
- Marshall College
- The Vatican
- Gizeh
- Himalayas
- Shanghai
- Sukhothai
- Iraq
While all the levels are fun to play (Marshall College is basically a tutorial), I think the Vatican remains my favorite. I recognize that it’s early in the game, and that the game does progressively grow in satisfying gameplay; but there is something magical about exploring such a famous and historically significant place. Every nook and cranny of the holy city felt meaningful and bursting with possibilities.
A lot of historical fiction and game experiences focus on the Nazi’s rise to power, but getting to experience the Black Shirts of Mussolini was a fascinating look into how a bunch of bullies managed to take over and dominate a corrupt and fearful leadership structure. Working with the resistance and standing up to the fascists felt like being transported back in time. The excellent graphics of the game, designed for the powerful Xbox Series X, further brought the Vatican to life. I really enjoyed my time in mission two and stayed until I completed 100% of the mission and side quests.
