The Legend of Zelda is largely a standalone series, but there are exceptions.
Oftentimes, the series will build on previous titles, utilizing the same world, characters, or general storyline. You can see this with Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask; The Wind Waker and its two DS sequels; and most recently, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
One notable exception to this practice is Twilight Princess, which is an absolute shame.
Full disclosure, Twilight Princess is my favorite game in the series. While I can acknowledge it’s not the greatest, it’s definitely my personal favorite.
A big reason I think it would be great to return to this game is there are a lot of fun opportunities to do so. For one, there are several species and races that aren’t seen in other games.
While the Ooccoo have an interesting lore, I think it’s the Twili that deserve the attention. During the course of the game, we learn of an entire other world that the Twili run. This would be the perfect backdrop to another game.
Twilight Princess offered a bare-bones representation of the Twilight Realm so another game that explored this space further would be a welcome sight.

Another big reason I’d love to see a return to the world of Twilight Princess is the missed potential from the first game.
It is absolutely fair to say that Twilight Princess‘ world was empty and bland. Hyrule Field, in particular, didn’t have much that was memorable.
As we near the 20th anniversary of this game (in 2026), it would be a great time to expand on the world and do more with it as a way to celebrate two decades.
Lastly, the storyline has a lot of untapped potential. Numerous plot points including the time-traveling mechanics, the ruins throughout Hyrule Field, and many of the temples beg further explaination.
In fairness, Twilight Princess does live in the world of Ocarina of Time with the Hero’s Shade being the Hero of Time. In that way, there is some connection.
That said, a new game within this world would offer a chance to really escape from that shadow and have the game stand on its own.
Many keep clamoring for Twilight Princess to get an HD port onto the Switch (or at this point, the Switch 2). While I’d still love to see that, I think it’d be better to offer a game that is set in that world and expands on its predecessor.
In short, give me a new adventure instead of a revisit.
