Rumors have circulated for years. Leaks have been drip-fed to the public, true or not, for weeks. Then, on a quiet Thursday morning, Nintendo casually drops an “update”. As promised, they announced their next console, the Nintendo Switch 2. Now that the wait is finally over, what are your first impressions?

It’s a good question to ask because after years of hype and hope, I’ve seen a varied response on the internet. But honestly, what can you expect?
I’m not quite sure why some folks are taking a steaming dump on the name and/or design–the original Nintendo Switch struck the perfect chord with gamers around the world, minus the technical prowess of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. The Nintendo Switch doubled as a home console and as a handheld, came with an exorbitant number of first- and third-party games, and gave us Nintendo Switch Online.
It makes complete business sense for Nintendo to keep the next console simple. We don’t need any new gimmicks. In fact, I would say the general public and major news outlets were simply hoping for a “more powerful Switch”. That’s what I wanted, anyway.
In the two minute first-look trailer, there are a few things that were confirmed and a few other things that were teased:
- Backwards combability confirmed
- Nintendo Switch 2 is larger in size
- Joy-Cons are magnetic
- Teaser: Joy-Cons may possibly double as mice
- Teaser: the next Mario Kart may be a launch title

I’ll admit, part of me was underwhelmed; however, this was not Nintendo’s fault. All the leaks almost “numbed” me to the announcement, and that’s extremely telling that leakers really can ruin it for consumers.
Overall, I think the quick first-look reveal was enough to shut up the leakers and leave us hungry enough for more information in the Nintendo Direct on April 2nd. I am looking forward to seeing what Nintendo has in store for us next!
