Anyone who has had any run-ins with Moomins in any form likely knows where Snufkin stands on authority and rules in general, but Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley, holds no punches back, presenting the security officers styled like policemen as narrow-sighted, incompetent louts who care more about following orders than the good of the people that they’re meant to protect.

Of course, one might argue the officers are meant to enforce the law, keeping the newly created parks in order, but when they lazily disregard them the second a sign isn’t in view, it’s a hard view to take. Snufkin’s relentless distain for the officers, and the repeated abuses of power by their leader reminds us that as much as things change, things have a way of coming right back around.

Underscoring this anti-establishment attitude, Snufkin also knocks down self-aggrandizing statues the officers erected. His actions would fit well into the vandalism response-rhetoric often used in response to protests while a side quest involving recovering stolen items from a thief underscores that it isn’t morality that Snufkin objects to or even responsible laws. Snufkin directly fights oppressive forces.

At the end, after breaking Moomintroll out of the makeshift prison on the Park Keeper’s estate, Snufkin and Moomintroll unleash the water which the Park Keeper and his officers hoarded. Only the Park Keeper’s property ends up wrecked; however, despite the Park Keeper expressing regret and seeing the error of his ways due to Moominpappa’s play, Snufkin would have happily chased the self-elected authoritarian out of Moominvalley if Moomintroll hadn’t offered the hemulen a second chance.
If you’re looking for a game that rails against the establishment while being cozy and community-oriented, Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley delivers anarchy with pride.
