Boss Rush Banter: How Do You Feel About the Discontinuation of the Nintendo Gold Points Program?

In the year of change for Nintendo, the publishing titan announced the discontinuation of their Gold Points program effective March 24th. Gold Points are issued as credits to the Nintendo eShop. No doubt it’s in preparation for the Switch 2 launch, but how do you feel as a consumer about the removal of this Nintendo perk?

If this is news to you, Nintendo stated you will no longer be able to earn Gold Points on March 24th; however, you can still retain and redeem existing Gold Points for one year from that date. On the other hand, there was no mention of discontinuing their other program–Platinum Points–which are used to redeem e-wallpapers and other physical prizes.

I honestly am a little disappointed that the Gold Points program will come to an end as an avid Nintendo gamer. With all the games I’ve purchased on the eShop, these points have shaved off the cost on additional titles. I even preferred this reward over Platinum Points (e.g. even if I have enough Platinum Points to redeem a keychain, I have to pay shipping, and in the end, it’s just not worth it for me). However, I can understand the likely business-related reason as Nintendo prepares to launch their next console.

Nintendo needs to maximize the chances for success for the Switch 2, especially since it likely won’t have the same “lightning in a bottle” effect as the original Switch. In addition to that, I wouldn’t be surprised if a replacement program will eventually be announced. I feel like it is the same reason as to why the Nintendo Switch Vouchers won’t apply to Switch 2 games.

In the end, Nintendo needs to do what is best to ensure a successful Switch 2 launch. It may feel particularly difficult to accept changes when we’ve had the original Switch for about eight years. But, as you know, when another door closes, another one opens…

More information on this can be found on the Nintendo site.
