I didn’t think I could love another U.S.-adapted sitcom as much as The Office, but Ghosts is quickly closing in on that category.
I hadn’t heard much about Ghosts prior to stumbling across a post about it on social media. It got me intrigued enough to try the CBS comedy and I quickly fell in love.
Ghosts began airing in the U.S. in 2021, adapting a British sitcom that began two years prior. The British version ended in 2023 while the U.S. version is amid its fourth season.
The premise is a young couple inherits a large country home that is filled with ghosts. The couple cannot see the ghosts until Samantha has a near-death incident that leaves here in a coma. Once she awakes, she can see and talk to the previously-invisible ghosts.
Americans don’t have a great track record when it comes to adapting British comedy. One of the most successful attempts was the American version of The Office.
While Ghosts isn’t on the level of The Office, it definitely stands out similarly. I believe that to be with the focus on characters.
Part of what made The Office so successful was how much they made the viewer care about the characters. Ghosts does a similar tactic by diving deep into who the ghosts are and their feelings.
I’m nearing the end of the first season and I am astounded at how well they fleshed out these characters. While the ghosts take centerstage in this, the livings aren’t immune from this treatment.
One episode centers on Samantha traveling to Ohio to visit her deceased mother in a restaurant. She gets a chance that many would love to have: closure with a dead relative.
It is this type of character development that really does remind me of The Office.
Fans were invested in the Jim and Pam storyline, including their marital struggles in the final season. Strong and relatable characters are what turned a show about a mundane office into a nine-year success story.
I could see Ghosts getting a similar push. I still have three seasons to go to catch up but what I’m seeing with the first season shows me that the characters take priority in this sitcom.
It would be easy for Ghosts to just lean into the ridiculousness of its overall premise but taking time to focus on the individual ghosts and who they are really make the show stand out.
I am really excited to see where the show goes. What I can say is I haven’t this excited about a sitcom in a longtime, let alone one based on a British show.
