Is the Nintendo Virtual Game Card a Hint of Improvements to Come with the Switch 2?

2–4 minutes

Nintendo announced the Virtual Game Card enhancement at the March 27th Nintendo Direct, and this will go live via a system update late April. While this enhancement isn’t groundbreaking, it may hint to larger scale improvements in the digital experience for the Switch 2.

The Virtual Game Card essentially allows digital games to behave like physical cartridges. This will also allow you to seamlessly transfer digital games between two linked Nintendo Switch devices as well as loan out games to those in your family account for up to two weeks.

Many can agree that although the Nintendo Switch was lightning in a bottle and nothing short of a screaming success, its technological prowess lags behind other consoles like Microsoft’s Xbox. For example, Xbox has Smart Delivery, which automatically provides the best version of a game you’ve purchased to the console you’re using. It also allows for seamless gaming from device to device within your home with no need for additional content management on your storage drive.

More examples of shortfalls for the Switch are the experiences online play and browsing for games on the Nintendo eShop. Many people share frustrations of dropping from an online multiplayer session or lag of some kind. The eShop is already tough to navigate and search for games, and it doesn’t help that it runs like a slug stuck in molasses.

Now, according to the Nintendo website, we see a small footnote regarding the Switch 2:

“Compatible systems must be linked to a Nintendo Account to use virtual game cards. Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games can only be loaded on a Nintendo Switch 2 system.“

–Nintendo

If you notice, there is no mention of how Switch 1 games would translate to Switch 2, although Nintendo has previously confirmed backwards compatibility. So, I’m sure the Virtual Game Card will be able to transfer a Switch 1 game onto a Switch 2 console; however, I wonder if that leaves room for any sort of software upgrade or upscaling.

All in all, the Virtual Game Card is nothing new, and in some way, a “past due” improved quality of life. Although Nintendo intends to support the original Switch for some time, I believe the timing of this update coincides with a long list of digital enhancements we will be seeing on the Switch 2. Here’s hoping!
