The 1.5 update of Infinity Nikki introduced a lot of new features for the players to enjoy. One of these new features was the ability to dye various clothing pieces. The assumption that some players, including myself, had was that this new feature would require some farming of open world materials that could be used to unlock color palettes. It had been believed that the feature itself would unlock after completing a world or story quest. I had believed that this quest might expand on the lore of Stoneville, as dyeing was a major part of Stoneville lore.
Instead, Infinity Nikki has created a new currency called prisms to unlock palettes. Three different types of prisms can be used to unlock color palettes for five-star, four-star, or three-star clothing. This currency is limited, and there are few ways to obtain more prisms outside of purchasing them in the game shop with real money. Additionally, the palettes need to be purchased for each clothing piece. If a palette is unlocked for one item, it is only unlocked for that item. However, if the palette is unlocked for one evolution or recolor of that item, it is unlocked for all versions of that item. With the limited ways to obtain prisms, players must spend them wisely. Currently, the only ways to get prisms are through Mira Crown or from events. Otherwise, it requires an in-game purchase.
Additionally, some palettes are locked behind evolutions. Two of the most valued colors, black and white, are locked behind palettes that are only available after the third evolution of an outfit. That means they are only available for five-star clothing, as four-star clothing only has a second evolution, and three-star clothing doesn’t have evolutions. This limits players significantly, as certain clothing items are limited to a handful of color palettes. On top of this, some pieces aren’t able to be dyed in the first place.
Furthermore, it isn’t a true dye either. The color picked overlays on top of the previous color of the item. This makes it more difficult to get the desired effect while dyeing, as color palettes are limited. If players don’t have other evolutions or the glow-up recolor of an outfit to try and use as a replacement, they’re even more limited in what they can do with their clothing pieces. The original color of a piece will also peek through occasionally; or the colors in the open world don’t properly match the color within the wardrobe.
All that said, I do appreciate having some sort of dye ability in the game. While it doesn’t meet all my expectations, it does allow me to have a bit more creativity with Nikki’s wardrobe. That does not mean that I don’t wish it were better, or that they would consider fixing some of the complaints that I and other players have.
