PlayStation and Sucker Punch have unveiled a fresh look at Ghost of Yōtei during their State of Play on Thursday, giving us a 20-minute deep dive into the game’s world, combat, and new features.
Set to release on October 2 for PlayStation 5, the game builds on the legacy of Ghost of Tsushima with a new protagonist, expanded freedom, and a darker, more intense tone.
This time around, players will play as Atsu, a warrior on a revenge mission against a deadly group known as the Yōtei Six. Feared as a possible spirit reborn, Atsu explores the land of Ezo, a new setting filled with snowy mountains, war-torn villages, and hidden secrets. Exploration is more open than ever, with players encouraged to follow clues, use a spyglass to discover points of interest, or simply go wherever the environment leads them.

Combat has been expanded with a wide array of weapons, including a katana, spear, chain blade, dual swords, and even a gun. Atsu can unlock new abilities through challenges and altars scattered across the map, and a loyal wolf companion will assist in battle. Players can also customize their armor and take advantage of new movement and disarm mechanics.
The return of Kurosawa Mode, a black-and-white visual style inspired by classic samurai films, has been confirmed as well, along with two new immersive modes: Miike Mode, which adds a gritty cinematic feel, and Watanabe Mode, which features lo-fi beats during exploration and combat. Audio options include English, Japanese, and a stylized “Samurai Cinema” mode with subtitles.
Sucker Punch also introduced the Wolf Pack menu system, a more personal way to track allies and vendors met along the journey. A special edition Ghost of Yōtei PS5 consoles and themed DualSense controllers will also be available when the game launches this fall.

Ghost of Yōtei looks to carry forward the spirit of its predecessor while carving out a distinct identity of its own. With a new hero, more freedom to explore, and a richer, more immersive world, it’s clear that Sucker Punch is aiming to evolve the samurai experience in meaningful ways. As the October release approaches, it’s shaping up to be a standout title in the PlayStation’s fall lineup.
