Thirty years ago, I was nine when my father turned 40. I remember the day well. We went to my grandma and grandpa’s house who lived on a hill overlooking a lake and a campground they owned. I remember being outside on the front porch where my dad sat in a folding lawn chair smiling and joking with my uncles. We sang happy birthday to him, had cake, and he opened presents. Back then to me he seemed so old to me and now that I am climbing the hill and reaching the peak what lies there waiting?
My dad only played arcade games with us when my siblings and I were younger. I do not remember any other time that he played any other type of game besides cribbage and monopoly. He was always hard-working and instilled a lot in me, providing me with a strong work ethic. The difference between me as an adult versus my dad is that of my hobbies. I feel as I am getting older remembering all the work my dad did to provide for us as a family really was fueled because he had the time. This makes me feel a bit ashamed and stressed when it comes to priorities.
Back then life seemed a lot less hectic, more time for hard work and outdoor playtime. We would have done all our chores before we went and played and that always seemed to work out well and if my dad felt stressed, I didn’t even know about it. Fast forward to now, as an adult I always feel like I have something going on, something that consumes my time. Bills, chores, work, events, and so many other things. It seems like I really don’t have time or have my life come together as planned.
I feel like everyone around me, especially the adults that don’t seem to game, don’t take me as seriously as they may take others. The stress of that thought or feeling sometimes makes me feel ashamed and want to suppress my hobbies. Knowing stories of older adults making comments to young adults about playing games in a negative light makes me feel not heard or taken seriously. This cycle repeats a lot in my mind. Whether I think or feel those judging eyes stare at me I’ve come to realize that life is short and that not only should we work hard, but we should do the things we enjoy in parallel.
Playing games makes me happy, if it doesn’t make someone else happy, please feel free to do what you like to do to pass the time. Over the years I have had many people come to me to ask questions about games and recommendations. I feel that people do respect me for my opinions, and it doesn’t matter if I am 18 or 40, they cherish my thoughts on my past knowledge and experience. They say that to be an expert at something you must put in 10,000 hours and I am not certain I have obtained that title, but I will use all my knowledge to give the best advice throughout the new decade I am about to be living in.
