The 6v6 hero shooter Marvel Rivals has three roles that each hero falls into (unless you are Deadpool and decided to take all three): vanguard, duelists, and strategists. When you load into a game, you are free to mix, match, and do whatever you want as far as picking a character goes. If you are selecting the same hero as your teammate, it’s free game. The role doesn’t matter. This freedom is extremely fun but can cause problems if you’re trying to play seriously and win in a competitive game.
There are some unspoken rules when it comes to team composition. Every player in the game defaults to the classic 2-2-2 comp, meaning two vanguards, two duelists, and two strategists. However, it usually ends up being 1-3-2, leaving the solo vanguard to man the frontline alone, with three duelists and two strategists behind. In the common case, some team comps resort to three strategists, which is controversial to the Marvel Rivals player base. It’s looked down upon and avoided for a number of reasons, but it can be helpful when needed.

If a role queue option were to come to the game, the obvious choice would be the 2-2-2 comp just based on the fact that the practice vs. AI bots will always be in that composition no matter what. So, it’s most likely the “default” scenario that developers would go for in a locked role queue.
A negative that comes to mind would be that it would generate a slow matchmaking system. Locked into a specific role and in teams would make it harder to find games. On the other side of things, players would be able to avoid team comps they don’t like playing in or against and also be able to stick to the role they’re most comfortable in as in open queue.
In my opinion, having both as an option wouldn’t hurt in my eyes. I would queue for a specific role any day. What do you guys think? Leave your answer in the comments or discuss it with us in the Boss Rush Discord server!
