It’s a fact that the Marvel intellectual property (IP) contains a massive folder holding thousands of characters within it. The possibilities are endless when it comes to what heroes, villains, and everything in between that will get added to the free-to-play PvP shooter Marvel Rivals. Since its release in 2024, the developers have consistently released two new characters each season.
From a business standpoint, it makes total sense. They have so much potential in the IP they are allowed to play in. Players are excited for the release of their favorite comic book characters who aren’t even confirmed to touch the game yet. This creates a pressure to pump out as many anticipated heroes as they can to generate revenue in their free game, using skins, emotes, and other in-app purchases tied to players’ favorites.
But from a gameplay standpoint, it’s ruining the experience of mastering a hero and becoming used to the playstyle of others. When you’re getting the hang of everything around you, playing ranked feels more strategic and grounded. However, the gigantic new dinosaur added to the roster is allowed in competitive games as soon as he’s available, causing a ruckus and making it hard to adjust to the new team comps.

I understand new characters are fun and make the game feel fresh. But a few breaks between seasons won’t hurt, I think. And honestly, as a quick match warrior, it does not hurt me much if we ignore the sweatiness of each game I load into, causing physical and mental pain paired with visual clutter.
NetEase Games can take a few notes from other hero shooters of the same caliber. A slower release timeline would not be a bad idea to try.
Do you think they should keep their hero releases as is or put their foot on the brakes a bit? Let me know what you think in the comments or join us in the Boss Rush Discord server to discuss!
