GAME REVIEW: Backyard Baseball

Backyard Baseball may be a familiar name to some 90s kids, as this arcade-style sports game first released in 1997 on PC. It was developed and published by Humungous Entertainment and was well known for its loveable cartoony characters, especially Pablo Sanchez. While it has been ported a few times, developer Mega Cat Studios has taken it upon themselves to revamp the title for both nostalgic fans and new players alike in 2026. So, how does Backyard Baseball (2026) measure up?

Author’s Note: A game key was provided to make this review possible. Also, please note that the online option is still in the works, so this review will not include discussion of online gameplay.

Synopsis

This remake of Backyard Baseball retains a lot of spirit from its predecessor. It is a sports and arcade-style game with various modes to try out–both classic and brand-new. It brings back 30 (yes, 30) classic characters, stadiums, and teams and puts everything together with modern controls and sensibilities.

Analysis

Gameplay

The gameplay is relatively simple and optimized compared to its 90s predecessor. If you need a refresher or are new to the game, the tutorial is a fine way to get used to the controls. Once you familiarize yourself with the types of pitches, batting stances, and how to use the swing spot assist, head to the Clubhouse, the main hub where you choose what to play. Below is a quick summary of each:

Pick-Up Window: This is the primary section where you can play a game. It also houses the tutorial and online (TBD) options. There are a plethora of game modes to choose from: Quick Play where you can hop right into a game, Pick-up Game which allows you to play against the CPU or against a friend, Backyard Bash which is batting practice, Backyard Derby which is your homerun derby, and last but not least, Wiggle Ball which is a newer mode with a wiffle ball that is 4-on-4.

Each mode is fun in its own right and allows player choice depending on how much time they have. For example, if I have the time to have a full-blown baseball experience, I’d head over to a Pick-up game where I can hand pick my team. There’s a wide roster with varied stats. It was fun to act like a baseball manager, although through the few games I’ve tried out, it was difficult to determine if player stats made much of a difference. In the end, it was my skill (or lack thereof sometimes) that determined how all my players turned out.

Batting and pitching controls were intuitive and fun, and they were my favorite part. Over time, I did find myself arbitrarily picking one type of pitch and sticking with one type of hit when at bat. As my skills improved, hitting a homer became quite easy, and I wasn’t sure how the CPU was adjusting to it. The bigger challenge, however, was fielding. While the controls were simple enough–click in the direction you want to send the ball–it didn’t seem to translate or react as quickly as I wanted. In my first game, I was BLOWN out of the water from fielding alone; however, I told myself it was a skill issue. Several attempts later, my batting and pitching improved, but the fielding still left me losing every pick-up game. Also, I played on the Steam Machine, which I believe to be powerful enough to handle Backyard Baseball, but the screen stuttered many times during anytime I played the field.

My personal favorite modes were the Backyard Bash and Backyard Derby. It was fun to experience all the different characters, see their fun animations, and try out each of their skills (e.g. specialty bats). It was the perfect experience for some quick and wicked fun.

Records: This isn’t a game mode; however, this part of the Clubhouse will record all your achievements and record all your stats.

Hall of Fame: This showcases your trophies!

League Play: If a casual game from the Pick-up window wasn’t competitive enough, you can go sicko mode and try League Play. You essentially create an entire Backyard Baseball league from scratch with eight customized teams and play through a 14-game season.

Cards: What is baseball without card collectables? You can spend tokens to rip packs and collect cards of all the Backyard Baseball characters!

Custom Bat: It’s pretty self-explanatory. Same with Options.

Art Style and Music

The 2026 reboot of Backyard Baseball shines through its updated graphics and catch tunes. The classic characters return with just as much vibrancy and attitude that will have you feeling like a kid yourself again. Each kid has their own moves and catch-phrase, and the environments and bright and colorful. Toss in that chipper music, and you have an experience with carries lots of charm.

FINAL SCORE:

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The 2026 iteration of Backyard Baseball will warm the hearts of those nostalgic to the franchise and be a light and fun experience to those new to the franchise. There are several modes to choose from, making this a super-packed baseball arcade experience. There is a mode for everyone and every instance. Overall, the controls are easy to (re)learn for both veterans and newbies alike. Fielding was perhaps the only part of a game that I struggled with no matter how much I practiced, leaving batting and pitching to feel almost oversimplified. Sometimes I wonder if the modernized controls could lead one to feel that the difficulty level is lopsided, but that was my personal experience, and the only way to tell is for you to experience it for yourself.

Lastly, the game shines in its impressive and endearing roster of 30 kids. I enjoyed their animations, collecting cards, and experience baseball through their lens. Backyard Baseball (2026) has a charm to it, and it can certainly satisfy that hankering for the old days when you played in that ol’ sandlot. Sure, some may nitpick the game by comparing everything to the original, but sometimes you need to experience and appreciate Backyard Baseball (2026) for what it has to offer. Sure, I hit some road bumps during gameplay, but it was overall a solid experience and one I feel comfortable revisiting for a quick homerun derby or two. I also feel that once online play opens up, it will lead to more opportunities, as I feel playing with friends, wherever they are, will be the optimal way to play.
