Street Fighter 5 Poised To Take Street Fighter 2’s Sales Record

Capcom has recently updated their Platinum Titles page to include sales through March 31, 2021 showing off the fact that Street Fighter 5 is starting to become a really big deal for the company. At this present time, Street Fighter 5 is projected to be months away from breaking the 30-year record of Street Fighter 2.

Street Fighter 5 (Street Fighter 5 Championship Edition in its current iteration) current sits at 5.5 million copies sold since its debut. Capcom’s report shows that the game was able to sell an additional 300,000 units for Q1 2021 and was able to keep pace with sales of other Capcom titles like Monster Hunter World, Devil May Cry 5, and Resident Evil 2 Remake.

If sales for the game continues to keep coming in (and there’s no reason to think it shouldn’t), all Street Fighter 5 would need to do is sell an average of 100,000 copies per month to either surpass or reach the record of sales from its 34-year old predecessor.

Street Fighter 2 currently stands as Capcom’s single best-selling fighting game to date. Having released in 1987 in arcades, and eventually releasing ports on every system from the Commodore 64 all the way through to Xbox One and PC, the title would go on to net a record 6.3 million units sold.

Having just celebrated a fifth anniversary, Street Fighter 5: Championship Edition launched its fifth season update back in February of this year. The new expansion reintroduced franchise fan favorite characters Dan Hibiki, Rose, Akira (originally from Capcom’s Rival Schools series), and Oro into the roster with a fifth and final character yet to be revealed.
