Toby Fox, creator of Deltarune and the smash hit RPG Undertale, has confirmed via a blog post that the next three chapters of his newest game are being planned to release on the same day.
Fox surprisingly released the second chapter of the episodic RPG last week, making the shocking announcement just a day prior during a live stream “Let’s Play” of the game’s first chapter.
Deltarune first released on October 31, 2018 as a free download on Windows and macOS. The game was later ported to Switch and PS4 in February, 2019. Chapter 2 is also available at no cost, the reason according to Fox is because “the world has been really tough for everyone recently.”
Fox revealed during his blog posting that his initial plan was to release the game in full, but that “it’s hard both for creators and fans to go a long time without a release,” hence the episodic format.
The indie developer goes on to state that “So, next time you want to ask ‘when’s chapter 3,’ you can ask ‘when can I buy Chapter 3/4/5? I’ll give you a lot of money… I won’t know the answer until it’s done, though.”
While it is uncertain how much longer fans will have to wait to see the conclusion to Deltarune, it is certainly reassuring to know that there is plenty of content in the works, and that the next release should be well worth the wait.
Have you played Deltarune? Have you enjoyed the episodic format so far? Would you like to see other games take a similar route? We’d love to know your thoughts!
