WB’s Multiversus Officially Announced as a Free-To-Play Smash Bros. Style Game

Warner Bros. has officially announced their long rumored Smash Bros. style title, Multiversus, as a free-to-play game for 2022 on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. Multiversus is an “innovative 2v2 co-op-focused experience” with 4-player free-for-all modes, 1v1, ranked competitive play, cross-platform play, and cross-progression, so no matter what platform you play on, you’ll always have your Shaggy.

MultiVersus is an all-new free-to-play, platform fighter videogame. With an ever-expanding cast of iconic characters and legendary universes, MultiVersus will feature multiple online modes, including a team-based 2 vs. 2 format, 1 vs. 1 matches and 4-player free-for-all, along with upcoming content-filled seasons.

One of the biggest gripes with the recently released Nickelodeon All-Stars Brawl is that the game felt low budget, having bad netcode for online matches, omitting characters, and no voice acting to save money. WB Games is also letting players into their Multiversus playtest sessions, which you can sign up for via their website. There is little known about progression and monetization at the moment, but if it’s done right, there will be another option for Smash players.

My Take:

I’m surprised it took this long for developers and publishers to create a Super Smash Bros. clone. Besides that terrible Shrek game on the original Xbox, TMNT Smash Up on Wii, and the indie hit Brawlout, there are little to no options for platform fighters. WB Games is underrated in the talk surrounding quality in their titles in my opinion, so Multiversus has a lot of potential to be a knockout.
