Sonic Frontiers Delayed Out of 2021 to Ensure Quality

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the more interesting characters in video games. He is one of the icons that both knows exactly who he is and has no clue what direction to go. Sega hopes to rectify that with Sonic Frontiers, the new “open-zone” game coming this year. As first reported by Sonic Stadium, Sonic Frontiers was supposed to be the game that celebrated the blue blur’s 30th anniversary, but due to multiple factors, was delayed to this year to ensure the quality of the title.

In a recent investor meeting, Sega revealed their plans for Sonic Frontiers and how plans for the title changed over time.

“Originally it was planned to be released on this year, the 30th anniversary of Sonic, but we have postponed the release for a year in order to further brush up the quality. Not only for this title, but during the development phase, we have been steadily conducting analysis to improve the quality of the title before release, such as introducing game testing based on external evaluations, and I have a feeling that it will become a good game and have high expectations for it.”

Sega also revealed how Sonic Frontiers is going to be a bold new beginning for the franchise and how they want this to be the formula for the future.

“For the pricing strategy, we feel that we are at a point where we need to rethink. For example, for the new Sonic game, as we are focusing on quality and spending certain amount[s] of money on [the] development, we think it is important to maintain the price by maintaining the value of the IP at [a] high level, rather than simply lowering the price at [an] early stage to increase the number of unit sales.”

Sega Official Statement, Investor Call

Sonic Frontiers looks like a very interesting take on the franchise with the internet even going as far as calling it The Legend of Sonic Breath of the Hedgehog in some outlets. An open world style game might actually benefit the franchise’s core focus of speed and acrobatics. As someone who grew up “the Sega kid” in the 90’s, I will always root for Sonic games to be good. I even liked the movie and the recent rerelease of Sonic Colors. I hope this is finally the point where Sonic can keep up with the competition and find his footing.
